What we do
The Issue
There is a massive disconnect within specific communities regarding health plans, also known as “Health Insurance.” Most teens, especially in urban or limited access communities, are not taught the true importance of having health insurance once they graduate or transitions off their parents’ benefits after a certain age. Let alone being taught how to choose a benefits plan without a company only explaining the basics. In comparison, outside of random conversations, health insurance and benefits in other communities are spoken at some dinner tables.
There is a disconnection in the older communities when transitioning to Medicare and leaves a gap for lack of understanding of their coverage. Some of those individuals with supplemental plans either don’t know how to utilize them or are under the impression they received exclusive benefits. Which also includes individuals on Medicaid.
Our Approach
Within these communities, they are provided hotline numbers, state-operated offices such as the Health Department assist with questions. But knowing that some individuals feel as though they are not very helpful or have had a bad experience speaking with someone, whether verbal or face to face, this causing an even more significant disconnection. Most individuals prefer someone within their community to explain, provide truth and clarity, which helps eliminate frustrations and feel more comfortable.
Our primary approach is to bring the tools and resources to our communities. By teaching the youth and younger adults the importance of health plans and distinguishing them, they are well aware of their options once they enter the workforce. Also, it re-educated the older communities on the benefits and resources they have available. So as a whole, everyone can have the tools to be successful with their plans and use the proper terminology.
